The city of New Rochelle celebrated the completion of phase 1 of its North Avenue Streetscape last week, the “College District.”
The $4 million project, two years in construction, is designed to renovate the city”™s main north-south thoroughfare south of Eastchester Road through a widened roadway and the underground burial of bulky overhead telephone, cable and electrical utility lines. In addition, a crimson-colored textured crosswalk in front of Iona College and new bollards delineate the flow of pedestrian traffic.
The ceremony was attended by city officials and U.S. Rep Nita Lowey, D-Harrison.
“The dramatic positive changes in North Avenue’s College District will make a significant difference for the thousands of residents, students and business owners who live, work, travel and commute along New Rochelle”™s principal north-south artery,” said Mayor Noam Bramson in a statement.
The “College District” was designed by IQ Landscape Architects and constructed by Tricarico Contracting.
The city partnered with Iona College, the Chamber of Commerce, Renew North Avenue and other stakeholder groups to complete the project.
The North Avenue Streetscape project was funded through grants from Westchester County ($1,500,000); the U.S. Highway Transportation Administration ($991,000); a federal Housing and Urban Development planning grant ($463,000): a state community development block grant ($337,000); utility company reimbursements ($509,000); and Iona College ($200,000).
Also at the ceremony, city officials announced that phase 2, the “Government District,” is in the final design stages and will be ready for construction next year. Designed by the RBA Group, features of this district include redesigns of The Boulevard Plaza gateway entrance to the city”™s historic district and the Hamilton Avenue peninsula. The estimated project cost is $2.5 million.
Phase 3, the downtown “Transportation District,” is currently being designed by IQ Landscape Architects.
