A groundbreaking was held Friday in Middletown to mark the beginning of construction on one of the largest privately owned solar installations in the state.
President Container Group Inc., a New Jersey-based corrugated box company with a manufacturing facility in Orange County, partnered with Fairfield, Conn.-based General Electric Co. to design and build a 2-megawatt solar array. According to a press release, the companies expect the ground-mounted installation to generate about a quarter of the energy used by President Container.
“As part of the agreement, GE is providing PCG a solar solution consisting of equipment, site engineering, construction and installation, commissioning, spare parts, and operations and maintenance support for seven years,” the release stated.
President Container also took advantage of the state”™s NY-Sun Incentive Program, which is designed to provide financial help in order to minimize the costs of installing solar systems.
“The GE team worked with us through every part of the process, from the incentive applications and zoning approvals, to the equipment and site engineering, all the way to today”™s installation,” said Larry Grossbard, general manager of President Container, in a statement.
President Container expects commercial operation to begin this fall.
