As it turns out, Connecticut”™s top labor cop can even put a stop to Men of Steel.
In the past month, the Connecticut Department of Labor issued stop-work orders at a half-dozen construction sites in Fairfield County, including on Abbey Rd. in Danbury where New Jersey-based Men of Steel Rebar Fabricators L.L.C. is a contractor.
DOL issues stop-work orders if companies misclassify workers as independent contractors with the intent of avoiding obligations under federal and state employment laws covering such matters as workers”™ compensation, unemployment taxes and payroll reporting.
The March raids impacted both Connecticut and New York contractors, with other stop-work orders levied on projects at:
Ӣ 540 Federal Rd. in Brookfield, for Galicia Construction, Mono Crete Steps, A.C.V.B. General Contractors, and East Side Builders;
Ӣ 60 Coleytown Rd. in Westport, for Proline Carpentry and Arnol Painting;
Ӣ 555 Pacific St. in Stamford, for Gomez Painting Services;
Ӣ 2200 Atlantic St. in Stamford, for Affordable Floors, Angelo & William Flooring and TJ & Son; and
Ӣ Rivington Hills in Danbury, for Gamma Master Framers.
Companies issued a stop-work order have 10 days to appeal, and can resume work upon providing proof of compliance.
