Bridgeport’s Green Energy Park is a step closer to fueling the city’s homes.
Mayor Bill Finch announced the fuel cell components have been installed at the long-abandoned landfill in Seaside Park. The clean-energy project is a collaboration between the city and United Illuminating, the New-Haven based regional electric distribution company. The project was approved in November.
Work on the park has moved into the next phase ”“ tying together the fuel cell components. By next month, equipment will be installed to connect the fuel cell to Bridgeport”™s energy grid. The first panels will be installed in early July, and the fuel cell will be complete and producing energy in the fall.
The project will include 9,000 solar panels and a 2.8-megawatt fuel cell facility, powering 5,000 homes and creating up to 92 jobs, the city said.
The Green Energy Park is expected to earn the city $7 million over the course of its 20-year lease.
Bridgeport also has a 14.9-megawatt fuel cell plant active on Railroad Avenue owned by national energy company Dominion Resources Inc. and developed by FuelCell Energy of Danbury. Fuel cell energy powers 15,000 homes in Bridgeport, and the city has plans to increase that number to 19,000 in the future.
