New York”™s attorney general and state comptroller have approved the state”™s $3.142 billion contract with Tappan Zee Constructors to design and build a new Tappan Zee Bridge.
The contract was approved in December by the state Thruway Authority board. The winning bidder among three finalists is a consortium of Fluor Enterprises, American Bridge Co., Granite Construction Northeast. and Traylor Bros. Inc.
Howard P. Milstein, chairman of the Thruway Authority board, noted that the design-build contract was $1.7 billion less than original state and federal cost estimates. State officials have estimated the project will entail an additional $500 million to $800 million in costs on top of the Tappan Zee Constructors contract.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in a press release called the approvals from Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman and Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli “another milestone for the new bridge project that is now ready to break ground this year.”
Construction is expected to begin this spring. The project is scheduled for completion in 5 years 2/ ½ months.
