Yonkers’ first licensed retail store for cannabis products has opened. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held late yesterday afternoon for The Plant, which is located at 2595 Central Park Ave.
“Opening The Plant is the culmination of a lifetime dream. The Plant is more than just a retail location, but a way to use cannabis to bring together people, culture, and community,” said Anthony Bannister, CEO and co-owner of The Plant. “Our neighbors can look to The Plant not just for high-quality, tested cannabis products, but for a forum to learn more about cannabis and explore the multitude of benefits it can have on individuals and society.”
The store says it is intended to provide access “to the highest quality cannabis brands and products New York has to offer in a comfortable environment designed for people to quickly pick up favorites or take the time to explore something new.”
Co-owner Regina Bannister pointed out that there are a number of smoke shops in Yonkers illegally selling cannabis and The Plant is different because it is fully licensed by the state and its products can be trusted. She also said that the store’s staff has been well-trained regarding the products offered.
The state’s Office of Cannabis Management reports that the legal cannabis market in New York has shown immense growth over the last few months. Since February the state has nearly doubled the number of licensed retailers, with 118 dispensaries now operating. Year-to-date sales figures now top $132 million. During the week of April 20, sales reached a new record, hitting nearly $11 million, reflecting a significant 19% week-over-week change. Additionally, April sales experienced substantial growth, increasing by $5 million to $38.4 million, a 15% month-over-month change. Of the licensed cannabis retailers, 42% are women-owned businesses and 39% are minority-owned businesses.
