The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts low chances that Westchester would see more than 0.1-inch of snow between now and Thursday morning as parts of New York state and four other states continue being pummeled by massive snowfall amounts. Additional snowfall of up to 20 inches were possible for northern and western counties of New York state through Monday. Fairly light rain or snow is forecast for Westchester Wednesday night, with Mount Kisco having a 50% chance of seeing more then 0.1-inch of snow according to the NWS. White Plains has a 33% chance of receiving more than 0.1-inch of snow with New Rochelle expected to receive no snow at all, according to the NWS.
More than 5Â feet of snow fell on parts of western New York in the last few days, according to the NWS’s Weather Prediction Center. Barnes Corners, New York, saw 65.5 inches by Monday morning, according to the weather service. Lake effect snow warnings for parts of western New York, northeastern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania were in effect into Tuesday.
The NWS warned that during lake effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away. Visibilities can also vary greatly. NWS urged residents to be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions.
New York State Department of Transportation crews worked overnight on roadways in Chautauqua County and Jefferson County covered by heavy snow. A ban on commercial vehicles from parts of I-80 in New York was lifted early Monday. New York State Police helped occupants of at least 110 disabled vehicles between Thanksgiving and Sunday. Troopers helped a 64-year-old woman who left the Rochester area with her husband en route to the Cleveland Clinic for a heart transplant. While traveling on State Route 5 in the town of Portland, they became stranded in the snow. The 64-year-old was being kept alive by a battery powered heart pump. State police and local first responders got the pair to the Jamestown Airport where they were airlifted to the Cleveland Clinic.
The Buffalo Bills’ home game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night was able to take place after crews and volunteers removed snow from the field at the open-air Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. The wind chill in the Buffalo area Sunday evening was in the low 20s, according to the NWS. Buffalo won the game 35 to 10.
New York state said that it had 1,836 snow plows in use throughout the state.
