Democrats dominated the election scene in Westchester on Nov. 7, maintaining control over many municipalities as well as the County Board of Legislators. Incumbent Mayor Mike Spano was reelected in Yonkers to a fourth term, defeating Republican City Council Member Anthony Merante. Spano becomes the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history. Term limits were lifted in order to allow Spano to run again.
Democratic candidates were leading in 15 of the slots for the Westchester County Legislature as of Wednesday morning. In District 13, Republican James M. Nolan was leading former legislator Ruth Walter. Ben Boykin, who represents White Plains, ran unopposed and was reelected.
The Democrat candidates for mayor in the river towns of Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington and Tarrytown all were winning as of Wednesday morning.
Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, who was first elected to the supervisor’s post in 1991, ran unopposed and was elected to another two-year term.
In Mount Vernon, Democrat Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard, who was unopposed, was reelected.
In Peekskill, Democrat Vivian Cyndi McKenzie, who was sworn in as Peekskill’s first Black female mayor in 2022, was reelected. She ran unopposed.
Westchester voters approved two statewide propositions. One removes debt limits on small city school districts and the other allows debt for sewage treatment and disposal construction projects to be excluded when municipalities calculate their debt limits.
