With the small business community notching another year of record-setting growth, Keith Hall, president and CEO of the National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE), is encouraging the American public to show its support for the nation’s small businesses on Small Business Saturday, (Nov. 30), hosted by the Small Business Administration (SBA). Not that it sounds as if the public will need such encouragement. According to the 2023 American Express Consumer Insights Survey, “projected spending among U.S. consumers who shopped at independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday reached an estimated $17 billion.”
Hall was part of the joint Winter 2024 small business campaign by MediaPlanet and USA Today, featured in print and online in the Q&A “Tools and Resources for the New Wave of Small Business Owners.” In the interview, Hall offers his thoughts about the record-setting growth of small businesses while highlighting essential policies, tools and resources to support the journey into self-employment. The feature also provides insights to help small business owners effectively prepare for the challenges and opportunities as the end of the year approaches.
With more than 19 million start-ups created over the last three years, Hall said, “American entrepreneurs continue to step into their dream of owning their own small business, oftentimes stepping out of the unemployment line to become a job creator for their local community.”
As the end of the year approaches, he added, “make sure you have your records in order. Make sure you’re reconciling your bank account. Make sure you have good control over all those records, because whether you do the tax return yourself or you have a tax professional do it for you, you’re going to need all that paperwork.”
