The People”™s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Bridgeport-based People”™s United Bank, crossed the half-million-dollar mark in local charitable giving last year, part of more than $2 million in giving in the Northeast.
The foundation awarded $516,900 in grants to nonprofits throughout southern Connecticut.
A total 69 nonprofits received grants in 2013 that supported programs addressing basic needs; financial literacy; workforce development and job placement; life-skills training; first-time homebuyer programs; affordable housing development; education initiatives; and after-school programs.
Recipients included Greater Bridgeport Community Enterprises; Horizons at Greens Farms Academy; Housing Development Fund; and The Workplace, among other organizations.
People”™s United Community Foundation awarded a total $2,126,944 in grants to 345 nonprofits in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine last year. The funding was spread across three broad arenas: 42 percent to youth development; 31 percent to community development; and 18 percent to affordable housing initiatives. The foundation also contributed 9 percent of its funding to local United Way organizations across its footprint through a People”™s United Bank employee matching-donation campaign.
