The U.S. Department of Defense has announced Maryland-based Lockheed Martin”™s recently acquired unit, Sikorsky Aircraft of Stratford, has won a modification contract to deliver 29 MH-60R helicopters worth $354.2 million.
The defense department states that the contract was awarded to provide funding for the Navy’s fifth program year for the helicopters as well as for associated program and logistics support.
According to Lockheed Martin, the MH-60R (Romeo) is the world”™s most advanced maritime helicopter and is deployed today with the U.S. Navy as the primary anti-submarine warfare anti-surface weapon system for open ocean and coastal zones. The adaptable aircraft is able to operate from frigates, destroyers, cruisers and aircraft carriers and is found in military arsenals around the world.
Lockheed serves as the integrator for the MH-60R”™s Common Cockpit Avionics Suite ”“ the Romeo”™s nerve center ”“ and other systems, while Sikorsky manufactures the airframe.
Work on the project is expected to be complete on Dec. 31, 2017, and the work will be performed in Stratford.
