Sacred Heart University’s West Campus has become the new home of the Igor I. Sikorsky Historical Archives.
Sikorsky formed the Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation in 1923 and developed the first practical helicopter in 1939. A display case outside the newly dedicated offices near SHU’s IDEA Lab on the West Building’s first floor contains blueprints, aircraft photographs and models that represent Sikorsky’s accomplishments. Students, faculty and staff can view the models of many of Sikorsky’s fixed and rotary winged aircraft as well as historical information of Igor Sikorsky’s life.
“We are delighted to celebrate the final home for the archives,” said John J. Petillo, the university’s president. “This is a great inspiration for our students, and we can only hope they’re inspired and motivated by Igor Sikorsky’s innovative mind.”
