ÂThe Playbook, a digest-sized monthly magazine specifically designed to capture the interest of casino and slot machine players and introduce them to horse racing, will debut at Empire City at Yonkers Raceway this summer.
“The racing industry has struggled to gain the attention of casino players, even those already attending racetracks,” said Jay Bergman, publisher of The Playbook.
The magazine will cater to the casino audience directly and also feature an introduction to racing, Bergman said.
“When Jay first brought the concept to me I was sold,” said Bob Galterio, vice president and general manager of Yonkers Raceway. “We want to build Empire City as a totally integrated entertainment center with 5,500 gaming machines, fine restaurants and exciting harness racing six-nights a week.”
Bergman is a 30-year veteran of racing publications.
“I, too, was excited when slots and gaming machines were added at racetracks,” he said, “Purse money has helped invigorate this industry for owners, trainers and breeders. I believe the only way we can truly secure the future of this sport is to rebuild our fan base.”
Bergman acknowledged the contribution of Tim Rooney, president of Empire City at Yonkers Raceway for his dedication to the sport and optimism about its future.
“Tim truly believes we can tap into the gaming market and increase interest and play in horse racing. His support in the distribution of The Playbook will ensure that more future fans are directly exposed to our sport than ever before.”
