All Westchester Saw Mill Multiplex Cinemas, which has served moviegoers for three decades at 151 Saw Mill River Road in Hawthorne, will close its doors Jan. 18, according to theater officials.
The Business Journal reported in October that the Mount Pleasant Planning Board, which oversees the hamlet of Hawthorne, at its Oct. 19 meeting approved site plans to replace the theater with a more than 67,000-square-foot Audi dealership, car wash and service center.
Planning Board representative Carolyn Saracino said Monday that the planning approval process has been completed and granted, and the town is waiting on final paperwork to be completed by developers before the project moves to the town’s building department.
“The ball is in their court now,” Saracino said.
A representative from the town’s building department said Monday that no plans or applications had yet been received, and could not provide an estimated time frame for when that may happen. A tax department official said the theater is still paying taxes.
An application to demolish the theater was submitted by National Amusements, operating as 151 Saw Mill River Road LLC at the planning board’s Aug. 17 meeting. According to board documents, Armonk-based John Meyer Consulting, PC will serve as the project engineer.
The 10-screen theater is owned and operated by National Amusements, Inc., the Norwood, Massachusetts-based chain. The company also operates the Greenburgh Multiplex Cinemas less than four miles south on Saw Mill River Road in Elmsford.
Should the Audi dealership come to fruition, it will mark the company’s second Westchester location, joining another in Eastchester.
