Champs round out Travelers field
Padraig Harrington, who has won three PGA majors, committed to playing in the Travelers Championship scheduled for June 20-26 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, the week following the U.S. Open in Potomac, Md.
Also committing to the Travelers Championship were Zach Johnson, who won the Masters in 2007; and Justin Leonard, the 1997 winner of the British Open.
Other players committing to the tournament include defending champion Bubba Watson; Kenny Perry, who won the year before; and Vijay Singh.
Last year tournament organizers established a Stamford outpost in an effort to increase awareness among sponsors and donors in Fairfield County and New York. Last year the tournament raised $1.1 million for Connecticut charities.
The only other PGA tournament scheduled for the tristate area this summer is the Barclays in Edison, N.J. Aug 25-28.
GE drives PGA deal
General Electric Co. reached a three-year marketing deal with the PGA Tour, with pro golfers to help GE promote its healthymagination initiative, and the company showcasing products at eight tour events including The Barclays in New Jersey this summer.
GE pavilions will include golf swing analyzers, with the ability to upload videos online; body composition scanning on GE”™s Lunar devices; and a self-guided educational tutorial on topics such as golf instruction, fitness, and nutrition.
Golfers Jim Furyk and Sean O”™Hair agreed to be “ambassadors” for the healthymagination program.
“We see this as an opportunity to educate both our players and our fans about their own health in a fun and creative way,” Tom Wade, chief marketing officer of the PGA Tour ,said in a statement.
Lake of Isles deemed tops in Conn.
Fairfield County was shut out of Golfweek magazine”™s annual list of the “best courses you can play” in Connecticut, with Lake of Isles (North) in Stonington topping the list of five courses.
Also making the list were Wintonbury Hills in Bloomfield; Fox Hopyard in East Haddam; Great River in Milford; and Oxford Greens in Oxford.
Pound Ridge Golf Course in Westchester County was ranked among the best public courses in New York.
