Equinox, the fitness chain bought by real estate giant Related Cos. in 2006 for $505 million, named Sarah Robb O’Hagan president. O’Hagan was previously president of Gatorade and global sports nutrition at PepsiCo Inc.
Equinox has 56 fitness clubs around the country. O’Hagan’s primary responsibility will be to expand the company’s existing brands: Equinox, yoga studio Pure Yoga, budget fitness club Blink, and cycling chain SoulCycle.
Equinox officials were quoted in reports as saying O’Hagan will also oversee the marketing, operations, finance, digital and human resources departments.
Equinox is expanding, with plans to open clubs in London and Toronto this fall and 25 Blink locations in 2013. SoulCycle plans to open new studios in New York City, Greenwich, Conn., and Brentwood, Calif., by the end of the year.
Equinox revenues were $400 million in 2010. Some analysts quoted in reports say it could become the second-ranked fitness chain in terms of growth, after L.A. Fitness.
The International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association says the fitness industry’s revenue in 2011 was more than $21 billion, and that the number of health club members in the U.S. rose 2.4 percent from 2010 to 2011.
