After closing its doors in January, the Bedford Playhouse movie theater is scheduled to re-open in the spring, according to Bronxville-based Admiral Real Estate Services Corp.
Renovations have begun on the building, according to Admiral.
In May, the building’s owner, Alechemy Bedford LLC, signed a lease for a 90-seat, nonprofit cinema that would show independent, foreign, documentary and classic films. The two-screen theater, which had operated in the town since 1947, closed after Ridgefield-based Bow Tie Cinemas took over the space from Clearview Cinemas.
The Friends of the Bedford Playhouse raised $2.5 million with more than 850 donations by its March 1 deadline to make the second theater possible.
Alchemy sought a new theater tenant for the 9,000-square-foot space, but the property was also marketed for restaurants as a possible alternative or co-tenant.
The new playhouse will be redesigned to incorporate elements of the golden age of cinema with modern technology and a cafe serving prepared foods, wine and beer. The renovations are expected to be supported through continuing donations and foundation membership fees.
