ArtsWestchester began its annual Art$WChallenge, a three-month challenge to raise private money to support the arts in Westchester County, this week.
Supporters of qualified arts organizations donate funds, which can then be matched through the Art$Westcheter program. Organizations are not limited in what they can raise through donations, but the match is capped at $5,000. Recurring donations are not eligible.
Up to $180,000 in funds will be matched by the non profit ArtsWestchester on a first-come basis.
The challenge began Sept. 15 and participants can donate through Dec. 15.
Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino, Board of Legislators Chairman Michael Kaplowitz and ArtsWestchester President Froma Benerofe have all urged private donors to help raise money this fall.
“This public-private partnership has proven to be successful in raising $1.9 million in private dollars to support the arts over the program’s seven years,” Astorino said. “Government alone cannot support all of the worthwhile needs of this county. In partnering with ArtsWestchester, we are harnessing our resources to build greater support for our cultural assets and, in turn, for our economy.”
Last year, 41 nonprofit organizations participated in the program. ArtsWestchester CEO Janet Langsam said in the seven years of the challenge grant program, arts organizations have raised more than $1.8 million and ArtsWestchester has provided an additional $1.1 million in matching funds.
“The Art$WChallenge is a proven and effective way to support some of Westchester’s leading cultural organizations that contribute to the vibrant quality of life in Westchester County,” Langsam said. “We are extremely pleased to continue this valuable partnership with Westchester County.”
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, ArtsWestchester provides programs and funding to make arts accessible throughout the county.
