The Bijou Theatre, one of the oldest buildings in the country used as a movie house, reopened its doors on Fairfield Avenue in downtown Bridgeport in 2011. The Bijou was built in 1910 as an opera house, but prior to opening changed course as silent movies gained popularity. Today, it has expanded its movie house vision to include a variety of art forms while still being true to its film origins. The theater launched its first Documentary Film Festival in fall 2013 and continues throughout the year to present film series such as The Reel Law Series, WPKN Music Film Series as well as the Sundance and Manhattan Shorts.
In addition to retaining its original character, The Bijou offers a full repertoire of music, comedy, theater and dance, which can be enjoyed in either theater seating or cabaret style. A full menu and bar complement the experience that starts when you walk through the door of this beautifully refurbished theater. Children”™s programming is also a priority, highlighted by December”™s “Santa”™s Crazy Christmas” and this spring”™s “The Mishaps of Mishops.” You are never too young to experience live, affordable theater.
In addition to its own schedule of events, The Bijou is also available for private rentals. It is an ideal venue to host both corporate and private events with its full-sized projection screen and technical support team to assist with every detail.
In its ever expanding vision of highlighting the arts in Bridgeport, The Bijou Theatre opened its new Performing Arts Center Feb. 8. A variety of classes and workshops for all ages will be offered by some of the area”™s renowned talent. Those interested in discovering or honing their creative side can choose from contemporary or musical theater dance classes, improv, choir or performing arts classes among other offerings. This new venture heralds the renaissance of the performing arts community in Bridgeport spearheaded by the energy of The Bijou Theatre.
