The Hudson Valley Resort calls itself “the perfect getaway.” And in an era where staycations are increasingly a part of the leisure landscape, the 275-room resort and spa in Kerhonkson, about 90 miles north of Manhattan, seems well positioned to service both vacationers and conventioneers who don”™t want to go far to get away.
“Its an easy and scenic drive up the Thruway so people don”™t have to wait on line at the airport,” said Eric Atkins, director of group sales and bookings for the resort. “And once you”™re here there isn”™t any reason to ever leave the property unless you want to.”
With an 18-hole championship golf course, a driving range, a spa, great restaurants on site, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, outdoor tennis and basketball, there are plenty of activities for a restless vacationer. But nestled in the foothills of the Catskills, adjacent the Shawangunk ridge line, there is scenic tranquility on site, as well.Â
Individual room rates range from $130 to $190 nightly, depending on the time of week and time of year. The facility “is kid friendly,” said Atkins, noting that attractions include the pools and a miniature golf course. The resort is also pet friendly, although it will cost you $50 to bring Fluffy along on the family outing.
Business people who want a meeting space away from the hustling metropolis would also find the Hudson Valley Resort a sensible and attractive place, Atkins said. There’s more than 41,000 square feet of “versatile well-equipped space” to handle up to 1,100 guests, who can use the Executive Conference Center, the amphitheater, the exhibit hall, the ballroom and the new outdoor Garden Terrace Tent.
But Atkins noted as attractive as the resort is, “It does make sense to venture off-grounds,” because of the beauty and attractions in the area. The Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains lay west and east within driving distance and Minnewaska State Park is only minutes away, with hiking, biking, swimming and climbing set among vistas of the Hudson Valley. Â
Atkins said that the resort has not collected data yet on whether they are seeing an upsurge in visitors from the New York metropolitan area who are staying closer to home. He said that anecdotally it seems people are not booking vacations as far in advance, as they nervously navigate the economic doldrums. “We are getting a lot of last-minute bookings” he said.
Assuming the economy recovers somewhat, Atkins said, “People are still going to want to fly to that tropical island and lay on the beach and that is their one week vacation. But there is business out there that is going to want to get away for the weekend and come up to the Catskills and Hudson Valley region.”Â
