In his first meeting with the Westchester business community, state Senate Majority Leader John J. Flanagan will discuss economic development issues facing the county and the rest of the state in 2016 as the featured September guest of The Business Council of Westchester at its Political Leadership Speakers Series.
The breakfast event will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25 at the Crowne Plaza in White Plains. Admission is $30 for Business Council members and $40 for non-members.
Flanagan, a Long Island Republican who represents the 2nd Senate District, was elected temporary president and majority leader of the Senate by his Republican colleagues in May when another Long Island Republican, Dean G. Skelos, stepped down from the party”™s leadership post after his arrest on federal corruption charges.
Flanagan began his Albany political career in 1986 when, at 25, he was elected to the Assembly seat previously held by his father, John Flanagan, Sr., who died suddenly during his election campaign. Flanagan, Jr. was first elected to the Senate in 2002.
Flanagan served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Education before assuming the top party post. Business Council officials said he has consistently fought to provide tax relief to New York residents and small business owners.
John Ravitz, executive vice president and chief operating officer of The Business Council of Westchester, said he has known Flanagan for nearly 25 years and served with him for 12 years in the Assembly, “so I know he understands the importance of getting out of Albany”™s bubble and meeting with constituents and business leaders first-hand to better understand the challenges they face to come up with long-term solutions to help New York.”
