Improvements to The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk totaling $2 million were announced recently.
The money will pay for electrical, mechanical and fire safety improvements, IMAX technology upgrades and renovations to tanks and exhibits.
State Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff, D-Norwalk, and Gov. Dannel Malloy joined Norwalk”™s legislative delegation in making the announcement.
The funding will be in the form of a state grant and is expected to be approved during a special meeting of the State Bond Commission on Tuesday, a joint statement from Duff and Malloy said.
“This funding is absolutely critical to preserving the Maritime Aquarium as one of Connecticut”™s premiere educational destinations,” Duff said. “The aquarium contributes millions to our local and state economies and is a top tourist spot for the state. This is a smart investment that will maintain the aquarium as an economic driver in Norwalk for years to come.”
“The Maritime Aquarium is a great example of one of our many cultural gems that bring in people from all over the region, attracting visitors from outside of our state and providing a great local destination for residents,” Malloy said. “The site has become one of the largest family attractions in the area, and these renovations will allow the Maritime Aquarium to continue serving as a first-rate tourist destination and educational institution.”
Brian Davis, president and CEO of the aquarium, said, “We are ecstatic and appreciative of all the support provided by Sen. Duff, Gov. Malloy and all of the members of our state delegation for their advocacy. We will utilize the support to ensure that the facility continues to serve the growing number of visitors to our unique facility. We are truly appreciative and gracious.”
