The Metro-North Railroad announced recently a series of reforms to better ensure safety for customers and employees. The report was in response to a federal request that followed a series of accidents and fatalities.
The Federal Railroad Administration on Wednesday released “Operation Deep Dive,” its 60-day, 27-point safety assessment of the railroad.
Metro-North submitted a response Thursday.
“Out of the 27 actions detailed in the FRA report, Metro-North has completed 14, is progressing on five and for eight has developed a training strategy to be carried out starting immediately. While good progress has been made, much more needs to be done,” Metro-North President Joseph Giulietti wrote to the FRA. “The problems identified by the FRA clearly developed over a long period and will take continued, relentless focus and ongoing attention to fully correct.”
Speed signals, “alerters” that monitor train operators and safety awareness sessions for more than 8,000 employees are included in the railroad’s actions.
