The county Board of Legislators voted Monday to issue $4 million in bonds to expand and rebuild the North White Plains train station parking lot.
The long-festering project will repave the lot, replace the ticket booth and improve traffic flow in the commuter lot, according to a news release from the county board. New lights will be installed and as many as 30 parking spaces will be added through a reconfiguration of parking spaces.
The lot will not be closed during the construction, which is estimated to last six months, according to Legislator Michael Smith, a Republican and chairman of the board”™s capital projects committee.
“One of the bidding requirements for the project is that the contractor would coordinate with the county and Metro-North to devise a work plan and ‘nights and weekends’ schedule that minimizes the impact on commuters and other parking patrons who rely on the facility,” Smith said.
North White Plains is on the Metro-North”™s Harlem Line. The parking lot, situated near the Bronx River, has been known to flood during heavy rains. The board said it was reviewing limited drainage and flood remediation options for the construction. New lighting in the parking lot and improved traffic patterns would improve safety for commuters, joggers and public workers in the area, the board said.
Legislator Mary Jane Shimsky, a Democrat who heads the board”™s infrastructure committee, said the Parks Department has agreed to present final improvement plans to her committee within two months.
The lot accommodates roughly 900 cars.
