This summer, Marvel Comics’s superhero supergroup The Defenders ”“ Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist ”“ will be creating the one thing New Yorkers can’t get enough of: jobs.
Last week, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced The Walt Disney Co. and Marvel will begin filming several Defenders Netflix series in New York this summer, creating at least 3,000 jobs. The commitment represents the largest film or TV production project in the state’s history, the governor’s office said, with 52 one-hour episodes scheduled in total.
“When the entertainment industry thrives, it fuels dozens of other industries and businesses,” Cuomo said in a press release. “The competition for these projects is fierce and Disney could have chosen to film these shows anywhere, but they knew that shooting in New York means getting to work with the best in world. These shows bring New York”™s superheroes home where they belong ”“ along with hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in new business.”
Netflix plans to create one season of 13 episodes for each of the “flawed heroes of Hell”™s Kitchen,” followed by a mini-series event in which the four characters team up as The Defenders.
Disney CEO Robert A. Iger said the production would likely inject millions of dollars into the local economy. Since Cuomo took office in 2011, his administration has placed a large emphasis making New York a more attractive place to film, he said.
In 2013, an estimated $477 million in tax credits spurred $2.11 billion in spending by the film industry, according to Cuomo’s administration.
“Since 2008 Disney has directly contributed almost half a billion dollars to New York”™s economy through television and film production, along with approximately 9,000 jobs for New Yorkers,” Iger said in a press release. “The governor”™s policies make this great state a more affordable and attractive location, opening the door for even greater economic investment and job creation for New Yorkers.”
