Iona College acquired several properties on New Rochelle”™s North Avenue including the Mirage Diner, which will stay open under the terms of its lease, the college announced Thursday.
The parties had a nondisclosure agreement and didn”™t confirm the deal until this week, but Mirage owner Nick Triantafillou said he first approached Iona about buying the diner over the summer.
“They have been a good partner and will develop the land in a way that supports the surrounding area,” Triantafillou said in a written statement posted on the college”™s website.
The college plans to develop a mixed used building that would house a restaurant or other stores on the ground floor and residences on the floors above. Iona also purchased the building nearby that houses the former Cannone”™s Pizza in November 2013. The college pays real estate taxes at that location and expects to pay at the Mirage location as well, according to the announcement.
The city approved a rezone of the area in June 2013 to pave the way for college to enhance existing commercial properties and develop additional off-campus housing. The college said it would be funding roadway improvements on city property and contribute to a financial assistance program that will aid owners of existing businesses in the college corridor enhance the aesthetics of their storefronts.
