The Savings Bank of Danbury Foundation recently donated $3,000 to Ability Beyond Disabilities, a Bethel-based organization that helps transition people with disabilities to independent living.
The grant will be used to cover costs not reimbursed by primary sources such as Medicaid. The organization’s program helps adults with mental illness as well as developmental and neurological disabilities find ways to live in affordable housing, reducing the likelihood of homelessness.
The grant comes at a time when state government officials are looking to increase the role of nonprofit-service providers and decrease the number of people using institutionalized care.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s recent budget proposal included a $13 million investment in providing more opportunities for seniors and adults with disabilities to move to community-based care providers.
“The Savings Bank of Danbury is proud to fund the transitional and independent living programs,” said Kathy Romagnano, Savings Bank of Danbury CEO, in a press release.
