United Illuminating Co. plans to build a new electricity substation in Shelton at a cost of $38 million, saying its four existing stations will be inadequate to meet the Shelton area’s needs by 2015.
The proposed 115 kilovolt substation would take high-voltage power from transmission lines and “step down” the power to decrease the voltage and boost the current for distribution to homes and businesses.
United Illuminating wants to build the substation at 14 Old Stratford Road in Shelton, a six-acre industrial property just north of Trumbull that was once used by Lord Corp. to manufacture seals and o-rings.
United Illuminating is a subsidiary of New Haven-based UIL Corp.
