When St. Luke”™s Hospital in Newburgh merged with Cornwall Hospital in 2002, it was praised for its innovative approach to collaborating and streamlining services.
The move to merge was praised by the Berger Commission”™s Report in 2006, which pointed to SLCH as a model, one which would eventually see tertiary care moved exclusively to its Newburgh campus and outpatient services delegated to its Cornwall site.
Accordingly, the Newburgh campus, which just completed renovations to its fifth floor, now has room to take over the 36 inpatient beds at Cornwall.
Cornwall will focus exclusively on outpatient services and work with its affiliates at Mount Sinai in the 20,000 square foot, $17 million Cancer Treatment Center that opened in 2009 on the Laurel Avenue campus in Cornwall. Cornwall Hospital has been moving toward offering outpatient and ambulatory services exclusively for several years and will now focus solely on treating patients on a same-day basis, while Newburgh will be the dominant campus when it comes to tertiary care.
Cornwall will still offer its emergency room 365 days a year, 24/7, but for those who come to the ER and need to be admitted to the hospital, they will be transferred to the Newburgh campus.
The cost-saving measure has been part of SLCH”™s overall plan.
