Affinion Security in Norwalk has enhanced its anti-identity theft offering to embrace more capabilities including those that apply to medical records.
A provider of identity theft protection services, Affinion”™s primary identity theft service is called BreachShield.
According to the San Diego-based Identity Theft Resource Center, more than 222 million personal records were exposed as the result of multiple hundreds of breaches nationally in 2009 alone.
Identity Theft Resource Center found one-third of victims of medical identity theft responding to the survey had someone else’s medical information or medical history on their medical record, increasing the possibility of being treated incorrectly because of incorrect medical records. Other victims were billed for services provided to an imposter or were denied health or life insurance for unexplained reasons.
BreachShield”™s new capabilities include Internet surveillance, address monitoring, streamlined identity theft recovery processes, credit card registration and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance.
“As we saw in 2009, breaches can come in all sizes, from 30 records to 30 million, and are becoming more complex in nature,” said Tom Rusin, CEO of Affinion Security Center. “By leveraging our 35 years experience in the ID theft sector and the scale of our company, BreachShield is able to offer a true end-to-end solution to companies, no matter where they might fall in that spectrum.”
Rusin said with new legislation in place, he anticipates greater scrutiny from the medical field and an increase in the amount of breaches disclosed by health care institutions.
