With an estimated net loss of 850 residents between 2005 and 2006, Bridgeport had the 25th-largest population decline among U.S. cities, a new study shows.
Connecticut”™s largest city had a population of 137,900 people as of July 2006, according to fresh estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, down 0.6 percent from the year previous.
Among Northeast cities, Buffalo, N.Y., suffered the most rapid population loss at 1.1 percent, the seventh-worst figure nationwide.
The Northeast cities of Boston, Providence, R.I., Rochester, N.Y., and Syracuse, N.Y., also numbered among the 25 cities on the Census Bureau list.
The list was topped by New Orleans, whose population was down 50 percent between 2005 and 2006.
North Las Vegas, Nev., was the fastest-growing city in the country at 11.9 percent.
