UST Inc. of Stamford has named Gary B. Glass as vice president, general counsel and assistant secretary. Glass assumes responsibility for all legal functions at UST.
“Gary brings a high level of valuable industry experience to UST’s legal function, which we view as an important asset as UST continues on the move in this rapidly changing business environment,” said Murray S. Kessler, UST chairman and CEO. “I look forward to him being both a sound legal advisor and strategic partner going forward.”
UST Inc. is a holding company for its principal subsidiaries U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company and Ste. Michelle Wine Estates.
Glass, 42, a resident of Chappaqua, N.Y., comes to UST with a history in outside litigation counsel at two major New York City law firm. He began his legal career as a prosecutor with the New York County district attorney’s office.
Glass earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Princeton University in 1987, and earned his law degree from Fordham University in 1992.
Most recently, he served as senior assistant general counsel, responsible for litigation and compliance, for Altria Group Inc.
Glass will report to Richard A. Kohlberger, who has been promoted to executive vice president, chief legal officer and secretary. He was previously senior vice president, general counsel, secretary and chief administrative officer at UST.
“Among many other accomplishments, Rich was instrumental in bringing to resolution the antitrust litigation of the last several years,” said Kessler. “He will continue to play a significant role in setting the company’s strategies and direction in the future.”
