Northeast Utilities is seeking $700,000 in federal funding to create nearly 600 charging stations for electric vehicles in the region over the next two years.
Hartford-based NU owns Connecticut Light & Power Co., the largest electric utility operating in Fairfield County, and Western Massachusetts Electric Co.
The federal funding would cover half the cost of building the stations, which would be created at public venues, commercial sites and residences.
NU said it is still refining its plans, with the U.S. Department of Energy expected to rule on the grant by the end of June.
