U.S.-Iran negotiations continue
Iran and the United States have signaled they are closing in on an agreement that would stop the fighting at least temporarily. Both sides are talking of a “memorandum of understanding” that will set out a roadmap for resolving all outstanding issues, although a deal is still a “work in progress,” according to U.S. Secretary of State Macro Rubio. The details of what is in that memorandum remain unclear. It’s believed an agreement now would see the gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and set off a 60-day process for tackling other issues, chief among them Iran’s nuclear program. On Monday, the U.S. launched fresh strikes on Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which is it feared could scuttle the talks.
Protest at ICE facility in Newark
Armed, masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents used gas canisters and batons against protesters outside of an ICE facility in Newark, New Jersey, in clashes over the weekend that lasted into Monday night. The facility is Delaney Hall, a privately owned 1,000-bed facility ICE uses as a detention center in Newark. Local officials have joined with protesters to denounce what they call inhumane conditions at the ICE facility. “The conditions are brutal,” said Selenia Destefani, a managing attorney and CEO of Nova Law Group, which represents multiple people in the facility. “People just sleep on the floor — overcrowded rooms, cold showers, no food, extremely cold in the cells with no blankets. Not sound conditions to live in.”
Trump undergoes medical exam again
Donald Trump’s Tuesday visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center marks his third visit to the facility for medical examinations since becoming the oldest president ever inaugurated last year. The White House said the check-up would include “routine annual dental and medical assessments,” despite him having already had two previous checks within a year described as annual visits and Trump having visited a dentist in Florida twice this year. Trump recently has been seen closing his eyes and apparently drifting off during official meetings. Bruising on his hands has been visible despite attempts to cover it up with makeup. Swelling of his ankles also has been visible.
Texas primary runoffs Tuesday
Republican Sen. John Cornyn’s uphill battle for renomination to run for another term reaches its conclusion Tuesday as voters head to the polls in the Texas primary runoffs. Cornyn’s race against state Attorney General Ken Paxton was considered highly competitive until a week ago, when Trump came out for Paxton and made him the front-runner for the nomination. Congressman James Talarico is expected to be the Democratic nominee. Cornyn has refused to drop out arguing a Paxton nomination puts Republicans at risk of losing his seat in November.
Rescuers try to reach people trapped in flooded cave
Cave divers are squeezing through narrow, flooded corridors in a delicate operation to reach seven villagers trapped underground in a cave in Laos for nearly a week. The villagers went into the cave in the central Laotian province of Xaisomboun last Wednesday in search of gold, but heavy rain triggered flash flooding which blocked the exit. Two Thai divers and a Finnish expert who helped in the 2018 dramatic cave rescue of a young soccer team in Thailand joined the risky operation Monday. To reach the trapped people rescuers are trying to navigate a 1,115 feet tunnel that in some parts is only 23 inches wide.
Explosion risk diminishes in California chemical leak
A crack in the structure of a chemical tank has helped reduce pressure inside, eliminating the risk of a catastrophic blast and allowing tens of thousands of evacuated residents to return home in the area of Garden Grove, California. A toxic leak or smaller explosion still is possible, and officials are asking 16,000 residents closest to the site in Orange County not to return home yet as they continue to try to cool the tank’s internal temperature. The evacuation orders were partially lifted Monday evening. About 50,000 residents has been ordered to leave the area as the temperature and pressure escalated inside the tank containing 7,000 gallons of a chemical called methyl methacrylate, or MMA, which is used to make plastics.
