Flexcar, a car leasing company that is based in Boston, has opened its first location in New York state at 2500 Boston Post Road in Larchmont. The company, which started operations in 2021, has been operating in Massachusetts, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Rhode Island. Last month it opened in San Jose and Richmond in California, the company’s first move outside the Eastern U. S.
While typical car leasing through automobile dealerships may involve leases of three or four years, Flexcar differentiates itself by offering month-to-month leasing. People leasing cars through Flexcar can switch makes and models should they wish to do so or terminate a lease at any time.
While Flexcar’s leases do not require an payment at signing as do conventional car leases, the customer buys an annual $249 membership. The monthly leasing fee depends on the model car chosen. Insurance and maintenance are included and monthly payments can be adjusted depending on mileage plans or vehicles.
Flexcar has leased a former Porsche dealer facility in Larchmont with about 13,400 square feet of retail and lot space. The company said it is creating about 20 jobs at the site. The company said it has taken a lease on the space through 2035.
“Expanding into New York marks an important milestone for Flexcar as we continue to scale nationally,” said Ryan Quinlan, president and COO of Flexcar. “We’re seeing strong and growing demand for greater flexibility and affordability compared to traditional car ownership, and this launch brings that model to one of the country’s most influential markets.”
Flexcar said that it is offering access to more than 200 makes and models of vehicles through the Larchmont operation. Drivers can book a car using the company’s website or mobile app and then pick up the vehicle in Larchmont or have it delivered.
Flexcar says that its customers have driven more than 300 million miles since the company first launched.
