HARTFORD – The Connecticut Environmental Rights Amendment will be on the agenda Friday during a public hearing held by the Government Administration and Elections Committee.
A resolution proposing that the Environmental Rights Amendment be put on the ballot for a referendum. The hearing starts at noon in Room 2B at the Legislative Office Building and virtually on Zoom and CT-N. The committee’s YouTube channel will also air the hearing.
The amendment would protect fundamental human rights to a clean and health air, water, soil, ecosystems, and environment and a safe and stable climate like other fundamental rights, such as freedom of speech. Under the amendment, money to protect the state’s natural resources would not be allowed to be diverted to other purposes, like the state’s General Fund.
The Connecticut Climate Crisis Mobilization organization is drumming up support for the resolution via email. It is providing training for those interested in testifying at the Feb. 7 hearing.
