Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers held its annual Turkey Giveaway providing Thanksgiving meals to families and individuals facing food insecurity. A total of 160 turkeys, along with traditional holiday fixings, were distributed at Saint Joseph’s Landy Court supportive housing development, the Saint Joseph’s Family Health Center outpatient health center, and to Saint Joseph’s mental health patients.
This initiative was made possible through the support of Saint Joseph’s and the dedicated efforts of the Saint Joseph’s Auxiliary, led by Moira Kiernan, member of the Board of Trustees and president of the Auxiliary of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center. Their commitment ensured the resources were secured and distributed, allowing recipients to enjoy a festive and nutritious meal.
Food insecurity is a significant challenge in Yonkers, and according to Feeding America, approximately 20% of residents in the area experience food insecurity, struggling to afford or access sufficient and nutritious food. This figure highlights the economic challenges faced by many as the rising cost of food continues to strain household budgets.
“Food insecurity is a pressing issue in our community, and no one should have to worry about where their next meal will come from — especially during the holidays,” said Michael J. Spicer, president and CEO of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center. “Our Annual Turkey Giveaway reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that the most vulnerable among us have access to the support they need, both in health care and in daily life.”
