YONKERS – Yonkers Arts has appointed Evan Bishop as its new executive director, effective Dec. 1.
Called a dedicated energy in Yonkers Arts since 2018, Bishop has served as the organization’s secretary for the past four years. He has been instrumental in developing and facilitating programs that engage youth and communities in Yonkers.
He replaces Ray Wilcox, who stepped down in August to become chief advancement officer at Backyards Sports Cares.
As a teaching artist, Bishop spearheaded the Art of Social Justice program, creating impactful murals and leading comic book workshops.
“I am honored to take on this new role and lead Yonkers Arts into an exciting future,” said Bishop. “We will continue to foster creativity, inspire diverse communities, and support local artists. Together, we will elevate Yonkers as a vibrant cultural hub.”
Bishop’s commitment to the arts extends beyond his work with Yonkers Arts. He has produced various community-based art projects, including the 100 Words of Wisdom Exhibit and the YES YONKERS! Community Quilt Project.
His passion for education led him to serve as a substitute teacher and educator in Yonkers Public Schools.
As a muralist, Bishop has collaborated with local artists and created stunning public art pieces, such as the Black Lives Matter mural in Yonkers and the Hip Hop 50th Anniversary exhibit at the Hudson River Museum. He is the founder and producer of the successful Yonkers Comic Con, bringing together thousands of fans and artists.
Bishop was born in the Bronx and raised in Riverdale, steps from the edge of Yonkers. He grew up in a single-parent household, developing a resilience of character under the careful guidance of his mother. He excelled in athletics, being named on the All-City team as a running back and safety. He excelled in academics collegiately, holding a bachelor of arts in art design from North Carolina A&T State University.
