Justice Alito: The New York Times reports that a flag that was adopted by the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 attempting to overthrow the government flew outside of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s vacation home in New Jersey during the summer seasons since the attack on the Capitol. It’s known as the Appeal to Heaven flag. The Times previously reported that an upside down American flag, adopted by the insurrectionists as a symbol of distress, was flown outside of Alito’s full-time residence in Virginia.
DuPont splitting: DuPont today announced a plan to separate into three distinct, publicly traded companies. Under the plan, a company called New DuPont would continue manufacturing brands such as Tyvek, Kevlar and Nomex. New DuPont will have a strong presence in health care products. A separate electronics company would focus on consumables used in semiconductor chip manufacturing and other advanced electronic materials. A separate water company would handle a comprehensive portfolio of water filtration and purification solutions with technologies in reverse osmosis, ion exchange and ultrafiltration.
Trump’s email: Donald Trump has emailed his supporters telling them to send him money because President Biden ordered the FBI to assassinate him when its agents were at Mar-a-Lago executing a search warrant for stolen government documents. President Biden did not order the FBI to assassinate Trump and, in fact, the FBI made sure that Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago when its agents went there. Trump had moved up north to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and had not been staying at Mar-a-Lago. “I nearly escaped death,” Trump falsely claimed in the email to his followers.
Severe weather: Officials in Iowa report that the F3 tornado that virtually wiped out the town of Greenfield left five dead and at least 35 injured. So far this year, the National Weather Service counts 827 tornadoes in the U.S. Severe weather continued Thursday, with powerful thunderstorms reported in parts of Pennsylvania resulting in tens of thousands of customers being without power. Severe storms with winds of up to 60 miles per hour and torrential downpours were moving through parts of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.
Labor statistics: The employment situation in the U.S. remained strong during the week ending May 18, with the number of seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment benefits at 215,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week, according to the Department of Labor. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2% for the week ending May 11, unchanged from the previous week. The highest insured unemployment rate in the week ending May 4 was in New Jersey at 2.3%. In New York it was 1.6%. New York saw a decrease in the number of new unemployment claims of 9,543 during the week ending May 11.
Haley flip-flops: Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who has spent months blasting Donald Trump as being incompetent, unhinged and not qualified to be president has announced that she will be voting for Trump. Haley was one of the most vocal opponents of Trump while she was running against him in the Republican primaries. Haley had previously blasted Republicans who at one time were against Trump and then flip-flopped to support him. Haley had previously predicted that Trump would lose in November.
