Giuliani sued: Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been sued in state court in Manhattan by Attorney Robert Costello and the law firm in which he’s a partner, Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP. Giuliani is alleged to have failed to pay $1.36 million in legal bills. According to the lawsuit, Costello represented Giuliani in connection with investigations into Giuliani’s business activities in Ukraine and his work for Donald Trump and Giuliani has only paid a small fraction of the legal bills he ran up.
Released prisoners: The five Americans who were released from prison in Iran yesterday arrived in the U.S. at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, who is in New York for the U.N. General Assembly meeting, said the prisoner swap could help in building trust between the U.S. and Iran and lead to better relations. Part of the deal involved the U.S. returning five Iranians it held in prison but it’s reported one or two of the Iranians have said they don’t want to go back to Iran and instead want to stay in the U.S.
Marines halt flights: The Marine Corps has ordered a two-week halt in aviation operations following the crash of an FB-35B Lightning II fighter jet in North Carolina on Sunday. The pilot ejected and survived. The airplane crashed in Williamsburg County, North Carolina, and the Maine Corps had asked for public help in finding the wreckage. Sunday’s accident was the third major aviation accident for the Marine Corps in the past six weeks, thus the halt in operations to allow time for a safety review.
Netanyahu’s request: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Elon Musk at a Tesla plant yesterday and called on Musk to remove anti-Semitic posts from Twitter and keep them off in the future. Twitter is now known as X. Musk did not agree to do what Netanyahu asked. Today, Musk indicated that he wants to start charging a subscription fee to all users of X. He didn’t say how much the charge might be.
Trump post condemned: The Anti-Defamation League, American Jewish Committee and Jewish Council for Public Affairs are among the groups and public officials who have condemned an anti-Semitic internet post by Donald Trump. Trump accused Jews who did not vote for him for president of destroying America and Israel. Trump put up the post Sunday, while Jews around the world still were celebrating Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish New Year.
UAW strike: United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain says the strike against the big three automakers will be expanded to additional plants if there is no substantial progress on new contracts by noon on this Friday, Sept. 22. The union said talks with Ford have been reasonably productive but it did not characterize how negotiations with General Motors and Stellantis are proceeding.
Roger Whittaker dies: Roger Whittaker, the British folk-pop singer whose easy listening sound enchanted audiences from the late 1960s into the 2000s, passed away on Sept. 13 at the age of 87. Whittaker enjoyed his first hit in 1969 with “Durham Town” and followed up with “New Day in the Morning,” “The Last Farewell” and “I Love You Becasue.”
