Sub search:Â Search and rescue efforts for the missing submersible that was on a mission to tour the wreckage of the Titanic have been intensified even as calculations indicate the oxygen supply on the sub could already have run out. It’s believed there was enough breathable air to keep the five occupants alive for 96 hours. Contact with the sub was lost Sunday afternoon. The international search effort involves ships, planes and underwater robots.
Gershkovich to remain in jail:Â A court in Moscow ruled this morning that Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested by the Russians in March, must remain behind bars in Russia until at least August 30. The court ruling was in response to attorneys for Gershkovich challenging a previous court ruling keeping the reporter locked up. The Russians charged him with being a spy.
Schiff censure: In a vote along party lines, the House of Representatives censured Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff of California. Schiff was lead prosecutor in the case against Donald Trump that resulted in Trump’s first impeachment by the House. Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, a Florida Republican, proposed the censure resolution that passed yesterday. A previous censure resolution that she offered was defeated. She was forced to rewrite the resolution to remove a provision would have fined Schiff $16 million.
MAGA shouting match:Â Extremist MAGA Republicans Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene got into a shouting match on the floor of the House of Representatives over whose resolution to impeach President Biden should be brought to the floor for a vote. Greene accused Boebert of copying her resolution and claimed she was the first to try to impeach Biden. The Republican leadership decided to delay a floor vote on impeachment for now and instead sent Boebert’s resolution to the Homeland Security and Judiciary committees where it can be bottled up. However, Boebert threatened that if the committees don’t recommend passage of her impeachment legislation she’ll use House procedures try to force an impeachment vote every day until there is an actual vote.
Gas explosion: China’s President Xi has called for a sweeping safety campaign in his county after a gas explosion at a barbecue restaurant in Yinchuan, China, killed 31 people. Reports said people at the restaurant smelled gas and a faulty gas valve was discovered. The explosion took place while the faulty valve was being replaced.
Kennedy Center honors: The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced the selection of five honorees who will receive the 46th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements. The five will be honored at the annual national celebration of the arts in Washington, D.C. this December. They are: actor and comedian Billy Crystal; soprano Renée Fleming; British singer-songwriter producer, and member of the Bee Gees, Barry Gibb; rapper, singer, and actress Queen Latifah; and singer Dionne Warwick.
