Zelenskyy to G7:Â Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is scheduled to attend the G7 meeting in Hiroshima, Japan, on Sunday. Leaders of the member national of the G7 are expected to pledge additional aid to Ukraine during their summit while also stepping up sanctions against Russia for having invaded Ukraine.
Earthquake and tsunami: AÂ small tsunami hit islands near New Zealand as a result of an earthquake that measured 7.7 on the Richter Scale. The quake was centered near the Loyalty Islands, which are part of New Caledonia. Small waves from the tsunami also washed ashore in some coastal sections of New Zealand.
Candle recall: The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that Target is recalling 4.9 million candles it has been selling under the brand name Threshold. The candles are in glass jars that can crack or break. Some injuries including cuts and burns have been reported.
Disney cancels $1B project:Â The Walt Disney Company, which has been under attack by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for criticizing his “Don’t Say Gay” law has canceled plans for a $1 billion office complex about 20 miles from Disney World. Disney would have moved 2,000 of its employees to Florida. In announcing the cancellation, Disney blamed changing business conditions and did not mention DeSantis.
Home sales slip:Â The National Association of Realtors reports that sales of existing homes declined 3.4% in April and the inventory of available homes went up by 7.2% to 1.04 million units. On an adjusted annual basis, home sales in the past year have slipped by 23.2%. The median price for all types of homes fell by 1.7% in April to $388,800.
Possible indictment timetable:Â A letter sent by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in Georgia asking judges to avoid scheduling trials and in-person hearings during the weeks of August 7 and 14 is seen as an indication that she’ll move on possible indictments of Donald Trump and others close to Trump during that time frame. Willis has been investigating alleged efforts by Trump and associates such as Rudolph Giuliani and Sen. Lindsay Graham to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election in Georgia.
