A Fairfield doctor has been reprimanded and fined $7,500 by the state’s Medical Examining Board for prescribing excessive doses of opioids for five patients in 2017 .
Naeem Sarfraz, an internist who is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, had his license placed on probation for 18 months.
According to the board”™s consent order, Sarfraz failed to coordinate the patients”™ care with specialists, failed to document examinations of their injuries and failed to provide nonmedication treatment for them.
During the doctor”™s 18-month probation, he must take courses in pain management and medical documentation and hire a doctor to review a portion of his patient records.
Sarfraz reached an agreement in 2017 with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection to stop prescribing controlled substances. Should he obtain permission to prescribe them again, the medical board will impose another year of probation upon him.
