Westport-based Anholt Services (USA) Inc. announced recently Southern Harvest L.P., a subsidiary of Anholt Investments Ltd., has acquired some 6,000 hectares of agricultural land in Romania in two separate transactions.
A hectare is 2.47 acres, or 10,000 square meters, making the deal just shy of 15,000 acres. Terms were not disclosed.
The land is primarily used for wheat, corn, mustard seed and sunflower farming. As part of the transaction, Southern Harvest also acquired storage facilities described as “large and state of the art.”
The acquisition brings Southern Harvest’s total land ownership to approximately 29,000 hectares, with the rest of the land in Uruguay and Paraguay.
Rudolph Krediet, an Anholt partner,  said, “We are very excited to work with our management partner, Jim McCarthy, to consummate this acquisition. We find Romania to be an exciting jurisdiction, both in terms of the quality of land and the nature of the commercial opportunity. We look forward to continuing our growth in Romania, as well as in South America. As always, our goal is to develop our agricultural holdings into world-class farming and related operations, bringing the land to its highest value use over time.”
Anholt Managing Director Joe Massoud said, “Since 2007, we have been acquiring high quality agricultural land globally, and we continue to be excited about the prospects for this investment class from a long-term point of view. We are fortunate to have strong operating teams to identify interesting opportunities and then farm the land in a sustainable and profitable way.”
