New York now has the strictest gun laws in the nation.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the NY Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act  into law Jan. 15, which bans assault weapons, high capacity magazines and has stricter measures for obtaining a gun.
Cuomo signed the bill after it was approved by the Assembly 104-43 on Jan. 15, and by the Senate 43-18 a day prior.
New York is the first state to ban magazines that can hold more than seven rounds of ammunition, and runs background checks on all ammunition purchases. The law also requires background checks for guns purchased at gun shows. Pistol permits must be re-certified every five years.
“The new law will limit gun violence through common sense, reasonable reforms that include addressing the risks posed by mentally ill people who have access to guns and banning high capacity magazines and lethal assault weapons,” Cuomo said in a statement. “This legislation ”¦ is about reducing gun violence and making New York a safer place to live.”
The National Rifle Association (NRA) issued a statement calling the law draconian and said they were outraged.
“These gun control schemes have failed in the past and will have no impact on public safety and crime,” the NRA statement reads. “While lawmakers could have taken a step toward strengthening mental health reporting and focusing on criminals, they opted for trampling the rights of law-abiding gun owners in New York.”
The law comes one month after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
