Trump denies plan to stay in office after current term expires
On NBC’s “Meet the Press” yesterday President Trump said he is not looking at running for a third term in office even though he previously said he wanted to stay in power when his current term expires. Trump’s assertion came despite his organization already selling red baseball caps carrying the slogan “Trump 2028.” Trump also said that he is considering the use of the U..S. military to invade and take over Greenland. Trump took credit for good economic news and blamed bad economic news on former President Biden.
White House posts image of Trump as pope
The White House has posted as an official image a fake photo of Donald Trump dressed as a pope of the Catholic Church. Trump had posted the fake image to his social media site Truth Social. Some of the cardinals who are in Rome for the Conclave that begins this week to select a new pope reacted with harsh criticism. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, was among them. Trump is not a Catholic but the White House said that he does support Catholics and religious freedom.
Trump unsure of upholding the Constitution
Donald Trump says that he doesn’t know whether as president he has to uphold the U.S. Constitution. When interviewed on NBC’s “Met the Press,” Trump said that he is not a lawyer and when it comes to legal matters he just does what his lawyers tell him to do. Trump was questioned about whether he would continue to deny people their rights to due process that are guaranteed by the Constitution but did not give a clear answer. Trump did not mention that when he took the oath of office as president he swore to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.
Missile hits Israeli airport
A Houthi missile struck the Ben Gurion Airport on the outskirts of Israel’s capital city Tel Aviv, injuring at least four people. The airport was forced to close for a few hours. Major airlines, including the U.S. airline Delta, canceled their flights into and out of Ben Gurion on Sunday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel has retaliated in the past for missiles launched against Israel by the Houthi rebels from Yemen and pledged more retaliation in the future.
Russian jets destroyed by Ukraine
In a first during the three-year old war between Russia and Ukraine, Ukraine reports destroying two Russian fighter jets over the weekend. Ukrainian military intelligence said a Russian SU-30 jet was shot down by a drone over the Black Sea. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said a second Russian jet was destroyed in an attack on a Russian airfield in Crimea. Russia staged drone attacks on Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv. Ukraine said that while Russia fired 165 drones, only a handful got through.
Sovereignty wins Kentucky Derby
The horse Sovereignty won the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville on Saturday. The winning time was two minutes and 2.31 seconds. The horse’s trainer Bob Baffert had been banned from having any of the horses with whom he was associated from running after one of his horses failed a drug test in the 2021 Kentucky Derby and subsequently died from a heart attack. Baffert handled six horses who won the Kentucky Derby and two who won racing’s Triple Crown.
