Trump announces new tariffs against Canada

Donald Trump has announced new tariffs against Canada, threatening to reignite a trade battle with one of America’s closest allies and top economic partners. Trump is imposing 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods, including electrical equipment and machinery. The levies take effect in 30 days, covering about $20 billion of Canadian goods, the White House said. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the country “believes in the benefits of free and fair trade.” He said Canada will take any measures necessary to support Canadian workers, farmers, businesses, and families. Ontario Premier Doug Ford called for Canada to retaliate with tariffs against the U.S. The Canadian Trucking Alliance, an industry group, warned of higher costs for consumers and bottlenecks at the border on shipments of goods.

Russian warship fires off British coast

A Russian naval vessel carried out a rare live-fire weapons exercise off the British coast on Monday, according to the UK’s Ministry of Defence, on the first day of Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s tenure. The incident occurred as Burnham assumed office, and amid increased Russian naval activity near the UK coastline in recent months. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov pointed to Burnham’s support for Ukraine in the war with Russia on Tuesday when answering a question about the Russian ship’s latest maneuver. Richard Dannatt, former head of the British Army, said Tuesday the exercise was a way for Russian President Vladimir Putin to show that Russia has “muscles that it can flex.”

New investigation into Epstein planned

Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin is launching an investigation into whether Jeffrey Epstein acted as an unregistered foreign agent for multiple countries, requesting records from the Trump administration on the scope of the late convicted sex offender’s foreign ties. Raskin says he already has found  “substantial evidence” that Epstein “acted to advance the interests” of the Saudi Arabian and Kuwaiti governments, advised the Russian government and worked as a consultant for a former Israeli prime minister. Raskin also raises concerns about the potential security risks Epstein’s foreign ties posed, given he was never registered as a foreign agent. Raskin believes there could be more information about Epstein’s foreign ties within the approximately 2.5 million documents that the Justice Department has not released related to Epstein.

Pentagon withholds casualty data in Iran war

The New York Times reports that the Pentagon under the Trump administration has been withholding information on U.S. casualties in the Iran war. The Times reported that when asked to explain why it has not regularly briefed news media on U.S. operations and casualties, a Pentagon official said it didn’t want to give out information that the enemy might find useful. CNN reports that the Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) is not regularly updated. A Pentagon official told CNN that while “it can take several days or even weeks for an injury to be documented in military systems” due to medical evaluation and review requirements, the DCAS database is “regularly updated.” The Pentagon’s top spokesperson, Sean Parnell said, “Providing real-time information on non-fatal casualties to the media is the same as providing that information directly to our adversaries.”

Iran official meets with Pakistanis

Iran’s Interior Minister held a meeting with Pakistan officials in what appears to be an effort to restart negotiations to restore a ceasefire in the war between the U.S. and Iran. Pakistan has acted as a go-between in previous negotiations. Meantime, the U.S. staged the 10th consecutive day of renewed attacks on Iran and Iran retaliated. With the Pentagon reporting that three U.S. soldiers were killed and about 100 injured in recent days, Donald Trump threatened Iran by saying every time a U.S. soldier is killed by Iran they will pay for that many times over. So far in the war, 17 U.S. soldiers are known to have been killed and about 140 are known to have been wounded.

Tropical Storm Bertha targets Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Bertha is slowly organizing in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, where it is expected to bring several days of heavy rain, gusty winds and coastal flooding to parts of the Gulf Coast from Florida to Louisiana. Bertha is the second named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which has gotten off to a slow start compared with recent years. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts a lower-than-average number of named systems in the Atlantic this season because of an El Niño weather pattern. Bertha is expected to track along the Gulf Coast and make landfall by late Wednesday night as a weak tropical storm near southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi. The New York Metro area is facing heavy rain and high winds from a separate system on Tuesday with flash flooding possible.
