Report: Greenwich co. eyes RailAmerica

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. reportedly is mulling a bid for RailAmerica Inc., which in May confirmed it is in talks with multiple potential buyers.

Genesee & Wyoming, based in Greenwich, operates short-line railroads throughout the United States that move cargo between ports and other hubs.

According to a Reuters report that cited multiple unidentified sources, other potential bidders for Jacksonville, Fla.-based RailAmerica include Kansas-based Watco Companies L.L.C. and several investment funds.

Fortress Investment Group acquired RailAmerica in 2007 and two years later held an initial public offering of stock, retaining a controlling stake. RailAmerica operates 7,500 miles of track across 45 railroads entities.
