Nic King, Proud Puffs

The first Black-owned cereal company in the United States

The first Black-owned cereal company in the United States made its home right here in Fairfield County, when Darien”™s Nic King launched the Legacy Cereal Company in 2020.

As of September 2021, King is working on getting the company off the ground and setting up a stable production process for the cereal itself, Proud Puffs, which offers buyers a healthy, low-sugar vegan option that also pays tribute to Black culture and the Black Lives Matter movement, with the cereal coming in the shape of a raised fist.

It”™s not so much about getting a customer base for the cereal, according to King, but about a sense of inclusion and community. He hopes to utilize Legacy to educate consumers on the importance of nutrition and health, offer college scholarships and fund incubators and accelerator programs to uplift more Black entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs of color.
