The moves come just days after WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon announced that Alpha Entertainment, the firm he created to oversee his alternative pro football league the XFL, was filing for bankruptcy.
The corporation reported assets valued in the $10-50 million range, and has an estimated range of 1,000-5,000 creditors.
“While a handful of executives remain employed, the league currently has no plans to return in 2021,” broadcast partner ESPN reported.
The Stamford firm says it is still committed to holding WrestleMania, its biggest show of the year, in Tampa Bay on April 5 but that it is "monitoring the situation closely."
Gone are the scantily-clad cheerleaders, "He Hate Me" and shirtless comedians. "I don’t think it will be driven by a pro wrestling personality or trying to be ‘off the edge’ as it was the first time," says one observer.
Millennials and Generation Z were the most excited to see the XFL games.
Two XFL quarterbacks, Landry Jones and Matt McGloin played for the Raiders for three seasons.
This is the third WWE incarnation of "Halftime Heat," with earlier shows in 1999 and 2000.
